Beyond the Fringe: Painting for the Market in 17th-Century Italy

Patrizia Cavazzini is an independent scholar and a member of the scientific committee at the Galleria Borghese in Rome. Her 2008 book Painting as Business in Early Seventeenth-Century Rome remains a cornerstone in the study of the Italian early modern art market.

Caterina Volpi specializes in the art of Naples, Rome and Florence between the 16th and 17th centuries. Most recently she curated the exhibition Guercino: The Ludovisi Era in Rome (2024) at the Scuderie del Quirinale, Rome. Her extensive list of publications includes the monograph Salvator Rosa (2014).

Pierluigi Carofano has worked on Caravaggesque painting with a focus on Tuscan artists in that school. In 2021 he curated the monographic exhibition devoted to Orazio Riminaldi in the Museo Civico, Pisa.

Ian Kennedy is a former curator of European paintings at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, and has written widely on Claude Lorrain.

Yuri Primarosa is a curator at the Palazzo Barberini in Rome.

Wayne Franits is Distinguished Professor of Art History at Syracuse University and the leading authority on Dirck van Baburen, on whom he wrote a recent monograph. He also co-authored the catalogue raisonné of Hendrick Ter Brugghen.
